A grammar checker is a must-have if you write documents and emails in English for work. After trying many tools, I found Grammarly the easiest to use among the grammar checkers with a free plan. It is available on four platforms: Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Let’s go through how to use Grammarly on your phone and computer.
The importance of grammar when drafting English documents
Is grammar really that important? Many English learners ask this question. So what role does grammar play at work?
- Correct grammar helps your readers understand your message clearly and accurately.
- It makes you look professional. Imagine emailing customers and partners with grammar mistakes. Not a great look, right?
Grammar plays an important role in everyday communication. If you often work with international customers and partners, writing grammatically correct English is essential.
An introduction to Grammarly
As mentioned above, Grammarly is available on all the popular platforms, so there are several ways to use it and several pricing options (including a free plan). Pick the way that suits your work best.
Ways to use Grammarly
- Use the Grammarly browser extension: You can use Grammarly on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge by installing its extension. With the extension, you can check grammar and spelling on the websites you use most, such as Gmail, Facebook, WordPress, Drive…
- Use Grammarly on Word, Google Docs, and Outlook: Install Grammarly Desktop on your computer, and the Grammarly suggestion panel will appear in whatever app you are typing in (Grammarly Desktop is available for both Windows and macOS; it requires Windows 10 or later, or macOS 11 Big Sur or later, according to Grammarly’s support page as of 10/2026).
- Use Grammarly on your phone as a keyboard: Download the Grammarly Keyboard app from Google Play or the App Store, then use it as your phone’s keyboard. It will catch mistakes whenever you type English in SMS, Facebook, Gmail, or any other app on your phone.
Pricing for advanced features
Grammarly currently offers three plans: Free, Pro, and Enterprise (October 2026). Pro replaced the Premium plan I used when I wrote this post in 2023. The paid plans add several useful features, such as:
- Advanced checks for punctuation, grammar, context, and sentence structure.
- Better vocabulary suggestions.
- A plagiarism checker that detects whether your text duplicates content already on the Internet.
- Context settings, so suggestions match the purpose of your writing.
Choose the plan that fits your needs.
- The Free version has no time limit, and its features are fairly complete. If you only use it for reports, short essays, or emails, the free version is enough.
- If your job demands strong English writing and grammar, consider upgrading to Pro. The image below shows the 2023 pricing (back when Premium was offered); check Grammarly’s official pricing page for current prices and features.
How to use Grammarly on a computer
On a computer, you can use Grammarly in your browser as well as in other apps.
Use Grammarly in Google Docs or a browser
Step 1: Create a free account and sign in at grammarly.com/signin.
Step 2: Try out Grammarly by creating a new document.
You will see plenty of correction suggestions, along with AI writing and paraphrasing features.
Set Goals to match what you are writing. For example, choose Business for work documents, Email for emails, and Academic for a thesis.
Following the AI trend, Grammarly also launched Grammarly GO (the 2023 name; Grammarly no longer uses it, and these AI features now sit under AI prompts). It can write content based on your prompt or paraphrase text you select.
Step 3: Install the Grammarly extension in Chrome to use Grammarly in text boxes on any website.
After adding it, click the Extensions icon and click the pin next to Grammarly so it always stays in the toolbar. The extension automatically picks up the Grammarly account you are signed in to in this browser.
Once the extension is installed, Grammarly appears in any text box you type in.
In Google Docs in particular, you get the same full feature set as on Grammarly’s website, so you no longer need to copy text back and forth.
Use Grammarly in Word, Outlook, and other apps
Step 1: Go to the Apps section and click Install under Grammarly Desktop, or download the desktop version here.
Step 2: After installing Grammarly Desktop, sign in to your account.
Grammarly Desktop signs you in through your browser. If you are already signed in to Grammarly there, it will recognize your account automatically. Click Continue to Grammarly.
Click Open Grammarly Desktop to finish signing in on your computer.
Step 3: Click Got it to close the Grammarly Desktop window. From now on, Grammarly will appear automatically on top of the apps you type in.
Step 4: Start using Grammarly in Word and Outlook.
Other apps like Zalo, Messenger, and Notes are supported too, whenever you type text.
Use Grammarly on your phone
Grammarly offers a keyboard for both iOS and Android. I’ll show you how to set it up on iOS; the steps are similar on Android.
Step 1: Download the Grammarly app from Google Play or the App Store, then sign in to your Grammarly account.
Step 2: Follow Grammarly’s instructions to grant keyboard access.
Step 3: You can edit documents in the Grammarly app on your phone, although it’s more convenient on a computer.
Step 4: Use the Grammarly keyboard to chat and write in English in other apps such as Gmail, Messenger, Zalo…
